The following is important information for both Plaintiffs and Defense to know regarding TBI claims with volumetric brain analysis Plaintiffs are more frequently using advanced imaging techniques, such as MRI Brain with volumetric analysis, to support claims of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Although the standard MRI brain scan often appears normal, readers may interpret the volumetric analysis as positive. Here are a few key considerations. I am available to offer a complimentary lecture to your office for a more in-depth discussion on these topics. If interested, please contact my office at Medsurity Experts: cousin@post.harvard.edu.
- Volumetric analysis measures brain volumes but does not diagnose disease, making it akin to a “ruler” for brain regions.
- Many conditions can alter brain volume and thus affect results, complicating interpretation.
- Volumetric findings on TBI are inconsistent, with conflicting reports of brain volume increasing and/or decreasing.
- A lack of pre-incident data makes it difficult to attribute abnormalities solely to recent trauma.
- Results can be confounded by recent or prior illnesses, alcohol, and other conditions affecting brain volume.
- A small private training set and Alzheimer’s-based calibration raise questions about its validity for diverse illnesses.
- Software variability raises concerns about which program’s results to trust, as different programs can yield different outcomes.
- Normal deviations are expected in results due to statistical variability across different scanners.
- FDA 510k clearance allows volumetric analysis programs to be marketed as safe but does not constitute an official FDA approval for patient care.
- Results should be carefully interpreted in the context of a patient’s history, as they could reflect various past conditions.
- The utility of treatment is suspect as it is primarily used in medicolegal contexts.
